Community Profile

Marine City is a riverfront community, centrally located on the St.Clair and Belle rivers. The first settlers arrived in the 1780's and obtained a deed for the property from the Chippewa Indians. The settlement went by the name of "Yankee Point" and also "Belle River". Samuel Ward was the first official settler and established the area as a ship building center. In 1834 the Village of Newport was established. Although know by that name for 31 years, it was never incorporated. In 1865 the village of Marine City was incorporated. In 1882 salt was discovered in the area and mining operations contributed to the growth of the Village. The incorporation of the City of Marine City was approved in June of 1887. Marine City is approximately three(3) square miles in area and now has an estimated population of 5,029.
